What are Chemical Peels?
For the best results from chemical peel treatments, Madeliene Elaine provides you with multiple options. Your individualized chemical peel with exfoliating solutions (such as salicylic, glycolic, trichloroacetic, and lactic acids) will give you healthier, more radiant-looking skin. At our Chevy Chase, MD office, Dr. Madeliene Elaine Gainers offers chemical peel treatments that remove skin irregularities, including scars, fine lines, wrinkles, rough patches, hyperpigmentation issues, and more. Chemical peels remove damaged, dead skin cells by using a personalized peel on your skin, which causes the oldest layer to slough off. When your skin recovers and begins to repair and rejuvenate itself, you may notice a clearer, smoother complexion. A chemical peel facial is a noninvasive option to make your skin bright and is appropriate for the face, neck, and décollatage.
What Are The Benefits Of A Chemical Peel?
No matter what level of peel you choose, a chemical peel performed by the experienced team at Madeliene Elaine has a number of skin health and beauty benefits that include:
- Revitalizing and rejuvenating the skin
- Reducing signs of aging
- Diminishing wrinkles and lines
- Balancing skin tone and texture
- Creating softer, smoother skin
- Brightening the complexion
- Minimizing pores
- Reducing acne scarring and causes of acne
- Addressing skin discoloration, age spots, sun damage, etc.
- Pairing well with other aesthetic treatments
Variations of Chemical Peels
Our Chevy Chase, MD office offers chemical peels in a few strengths (light, medium, and deep) to meet our patients' skin care needs and goals.
Light peels: You can receive a light peel on a lunch break and get back to your day. This peel strength will remove the top layer of your skin (the epidermis), giving your complexion a more radiant appearance and smoother texture. We usually suggest that you schedule a light peel about once a month for the ideal glowing results.
Medium-depth peels: This strength of chemical peel reaches further into the skin, and patients usually prefer to undergo this strength of facial rejuvenation treatment during an extended weekend. You may also need to prepare yourself for more discomfort during and up to one hour after a chemical peel. Medium-depth peels help patients with more profound skin damage, such as deeper wrinkles and darker pigmentation problems.
Deep peels: The most advanced of the three types of peels is the deep chemical peel, and it does require the most recovery time. Deep peels are an aggressive cosmetic treatment that may cause your face to peel, feel itchy, and swell for a few weeks. Patients who have a deep peel may have age or dark spots, sun damage, prominent acne scars, and deep scars. Because this type of chemical peel is typically uncomfortable for patients, your aesthetician can provide you with local anesthesia as a part of your treatment.

Is A Chemical Peel For You?
Receiving a cosmetic specialist's suggestions is the first part of the journey to smooth, healthy skin. Before choosing a chemical peel treatment for ideal results, a team member at Madeliene Elaine will assess your skin during an exam at our Chevy Chase, MD office. Chemical peel candidates typically have visible skin issues, like rough patches, acne scars, discoloration, flaky skin, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and more. We can suggest multiple strengths of chemical peels to meet your goals.
Procedure Technique
On the day of your appointment at Madeliene Elaine, we will ask you to relax in a comfortable position while administering your peel. Before applying the customized solution to your face or neck, we clean your skin to remove any oils or lotions. Next, the aesthetician will brush the solution onto your face and let it sit for a specific amount of time. We will determine the timing during your consultation. Finally, we will clean the solution off your face and apply a neutralizing agent. We encourage you to bring a light sunscreen and/or a hat to wear outside after the procedure to protect your skin from UV exposure.
What to Expect
Based on the strength of the chemical peel, you can expect your skin to peel and itch from a few days to the next couple of weeks. Dr. Gainers or a member of her team will explain how to care for your face after your procedure. Please keep in mind that no matter how badly your skin itches throughout the healing process, we do not recommend picking the skin off. You may cause scarring to your delicate complexion. We recommend using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen to encourage healing and protect your skin.
