What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

One thing that makes thinning hair or bald patches difficult to hide is the difference in color between your hair and scalp. Madeliene Elaine provides scalp micropigmentation (SMP) to minimize this contrast so your hair looks fuller and thicker. Ideal if your hair is short or closely shaved, dermatologist Dr. Madeliene Elaine Gainers uses scalp micropigmentation to treat anyone with pattern baldness and other forms of hair loss. Used alone or combined with other restorative treatments, such as follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT), SMP is a nonsurgical procedure that enhances the appearance of your hair. To find out more about SMP, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Gainers at her office in Chevy Chase, MD.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation For You?

Scalp micropigmentation is most commonly used to help men and women with a short cut who want to hide male or female pattern baldness. SMP mimics the appearance of hair follicles that blend in with the real shaved hair follicles on the back of the head. Scalp micropigmentation can also help anyone with areas of thinning hair or bald patches. Previously, you may have used topical hair loss concealers (DermMatch or Toppik) but prefer results that last longer. Scalp micropigmentation also works well if you've undergone hair restoration with FUT by minimizing the visibility of the linear scar around the back of your scalp. Dr. Gainers can use SMP with FUE hair transplants or other treatments to enhance the overall look of your results.

Our Scalp Micropigmentation Technique

At Madeliene Elaine in Chevy Chase, MD, Dr. Gainers is proud to offer this safe and effective treatment to men and women. Dr. Gainers will match the pigment color to your hair and apply it directly into the scalp, making thousands of tiny dots (stipples) that replicate the appearance of your natural follicles. Since the pigment does not go into your skin as deep as traditional tattooing, discomfort is minimal. However, to make you feel more comfortable, we can apply a numbing cream on your scalp before the procedure. To provide long-lasting results that look natural, Dr. Gainers recommends 3 – 4 treatments. She recommends each treatment a week apart. Your initial two treatments will take about 2 – 4 hours each. The remaining treatments take about 45 minutes to two hours.

What to Expect

After your SMP appointment, you can usually resume work or normal activities. You may have some redness or irritation on your scalp for 1 – 3 days. To promote healing, you will also need to clean your scalp and protect it from UV (ultraviolet) rays with a hat or sunscreen. At first, you should avoid strenuous activities so the sweat glands on your scalp do not influence the pigmentation. You should also avoid chemicals, like chlorine in pools, because it could impact your results. After your final treatment, it will take approximately four weeks for the pigment to reach its final color and blend with your hair.

Natural-looking Hair

Thinning hair or baldness may make it hard to feel confident about your appearance. Dr. Gainers can assist in improving your confidence with scalp micropigmentation. If you like your hair shorter or cropped, SMP may provide a beautiful, natural-looking appearance that matches the shaved hair follicles on the back of your scalp. When combined with a different hair restoration method (like FUT or FUE), scalp micropigmentation can help you attain enhanced results. Schedule an appointment at Madeliene Elaine in Chevy Chase, MD to learn more about SMP, along with other hair restoration remedies.
